知道 impact 表示“影响”,不等于能写对 have an impact on。

1. Impact:

The new transport policy did a significant impact to air quality in the city.

这里需要搭配 have an impact on。 因此两处都要改:did → had、to → on。

The new transport policy had a significant impact on air quality in the city.

2. Suggest:

My tutor suggested me to compare the two views before giving my opinion.

Suggest 后不能接 me to,suggest someone to do 结构不正确。

My tutor suggested comparing the two views before giving my opinion.

My tutor suggested that I compare the two perspectives before expressing my own view.

一次可以看到两种正确模式:只需说明行动时,用 suggest doing;需要说明谁做时,用 suggest that someone do,例如 suggested that I compare。

3. Adopt:

Students need to adopt to a new routine when they start university.

Adopt a new routine

Students need to adopt a new routine when they start university.

Adopt a routine 是采用一种安排,adapt to a routine 是适应它。

I look forward to hear from you about the interview.

Look forward to 中的 to 是介词,后面用 -ing,因此是 hearing,不是 hear。同类结构还有 look forward to meeting、look forward to working、look forward to seeing。

I look forward to hearing from you about the interview.

5. Evidence:

There are many evidences that regular exercise improves mental health.

因此应使用 there is,数量表达为 much evidence 或 a lot of evidence,不是 many evidences。

There is much evidence that regular exercise improves mental health.

Substantial evidence indicates that regular exercise improves mental health.

6. Despite:

Despite the government invested in public transport, traffic congestion continued to increase.

Despite 后不能直接接 the government invested,可以改为 despite the government’s investment。

Despite the government’s investment in public transport, traffic congestion continued to increase.

7. Contribute:

Poor public transport contributes to increase traffic congestion.

Contribute to 中的 to 是介词,因此后面用 -ing:contributes to increasing,而不是 to increase。

Poor public transport contributes to increasing traffic congestion.

同样的结构可以用于其他话题,例如 contribute to reducing emissions、contribute to improving public health。

8. Affect:

Air pollution can negatively affect on the health of children.

Affect 后直接接宾语:affect the health of children,不使用 affect on。

Air pollution can negatively affect the health of children.

意思相近的名词结构确实带 on,例如 an effect on、an influence on,以及第一例的 have an impact on,所以学习者容易误写 affect on。

I have done a lot of progress in English since I started practising every day.

Progress 与 make 搭配,而不是 do:make a lot of progress。

I have made a lot of progress in English since I started practising every day.

10. Significant increase:IELTS

The chart shows a significant increase of the number of commuters between 2010 and 2020.

说明“什么增加了”时用 in:an increase in the number of commuters。Of 则引出增加的幅度,例如 an increase of 20%。

The chart shows a significant increase in the number of commuters between 2010 and 2020.

11. Mitigate:

Investing in flood defences can mitigate the effects of climate change on coastal communities.

12. Play a role:

Public libraries play a role in reducing digital exclusion.

Public libraries play a vital role in reducing digital exclusion by providing free internet access, digital skills training, and support for disadvantaged communities.
