ومن أهم الفروق أن تربية الأطفال عمومًا هي bring up أو raise children، بينما تركز educate على التعليم. وإذا حددت سلوكًا تعلمه للطفل فقل teach children to…. كذلك لا نستخدم elder people للمسنين عمومًا؛ المناسب elderly people أو older people.

أخطاء شائعة
Parents should teach their children respect other people.
الصواب: Parents should teach their children to respect other people.
إذا حددت ما يتعلم شخص فعله، فاستخدم teach someone to do something، مثل teach children to respect others. أما التربية عمومًا فهي bring up أو raise. للمزيد، راجع تدريب bring up.
Elder people should live with their children, not in care homes.
الصواب: Elderly people أو Older people should live with their children.
تستعمل elder أساسًا للمقارنة في العمر داخل الأسرة، مثل my elder brother. أما كبار السن بوصفهم فئة فهم elderly people أو older people أو the elderly. يشرح تدريب older vs elder الفرق.
My sister got married with a man from Canada.
الصواب: My sister got married to a man from Canada أو married a man from Canada.
تأتي to بعد get married لتحديد الشخص، بينما يأخذ الفعل marry مفعولًا مباشرًا بلا حرف جر. لذلك لا تناسب got married with someone هذا المعنى. تدرّب في صفحتي get married وmarried to.
In modern society family become smaller.
الصواب: In modern society, families are becoming smaller.
كلمة family معدودة؛ وعند الحديث عن أسر متعددة عمومًا نستخدم الجمع. وتصف are becoming تغيرًا جاريًا. ويمكن عند تناول الأسرة بوصفها مؤسسة اجتماعية أن تقول the family is becoming smaller.

Admittedly, dual-income families are usually more financially secure, and children in good childcare learn to share and follow routines before they start school. However, when both parents juggle work and family, the time left for their children is often limited to a rushed breakfast and bedtime. Young children need adults who set a good example and set clear boundaries, and this is difficult to do in twenty minutes a day. In my view, the disadvantages therefore outweigh the advantages. Yet the solution is not for one parent to give up work but for employers to offer longer parental leave and flexible hours, so that parents can spend quality time with their children without sacrificing their careers.
