Henceはthereforeに近い語ですが、The road was closed; therefore, we were late.ではthereforeの後に主語と動詞があります。The road was closed, hence the delay.なら名詞句だけです。どちらも会話では硬く聞こえやすく、that's whyがよく使われます。
