PFP stands for profile picture: the image or photo on your social media or messaging profile. People write it in chats and comments: nice pfp, new pfp. Friends and couples sometimes set pictures that go together, and these are called matching pfps.

What changed
First versionDear Mr Lee, I have updated my pfp on the university portal.
RevisionDear Mr Lee, I have updated my profile picture on the university portal.
Pfp is a word for chats and comments. In a message to a teacher or in a work email, it's written in full: profile picture. In Speaking the full form is better too: I changed my profile picture. Nothing else in the email needs changing.
In English, avatar more often means a character or drawing that represents you in a game or on a forum: I made an avatar that looks like me. A pfp is any profile image, including an ordinary photo. So for a selfie on your profile, pfp or profile picture is more natural.
Your turn
Your new ___ is so cute, is that your dog in the photo?

pfp — It's about a new photo with a dog in it, so it's a new profile picture: pfp. A dm is a private message: you send it, you don't put it on your profile, and nobody would say your new dm about a photo like that.
Write a comment to a friend who has changed her profile picture. Say what's in the photo and pay her a compliment.
omg love the new pfp, the sunset behind you looks amazing
