In need 表示缺少钱、食物或其他基本生活所需，需要帮助，最常用于处境困难的人：The charity helps families in need。加上 of 后，意思是“需要某物”：The roof is in need of repair。这个结构比直接用动词 need 更正式。

修改后The old bridge is in need of serious repairs.
表达以 in 开头，容易在后面再次套用 in。但英语中引出所需之物，要用 of：in need of help、in need of repairs。原句第二个 in 应改成 of。
Needy families 与 families in need 意思相同。但形容某个具体的人时，needy 常有另一个意思，即总是需要别人的关注：He's a bit needy in relationships。谚语 A friend in need is a friend indeed 表达的是患难见真情：真正的朋友会在你遇到困难时帮助你。
