Before 也能表示之前，有时靠上下文就能明确参照点；单独使用时，也常表示过去某个时候：I've seen this film before。在这里 tell me before 的时间关系不够清楚，容易让人问“在什么之前？”要明确请对方提前告知，tell me in advance 更自然，因此作此替换。
提前多久放在 in advance 前面：book a table two days in advance。要指出具体事件，可以用 in advance of：in advance of the meeting。日常说话中，before the meeting 更简单。
