이 주제에서 발목을 잡는 것은 어휘 부족이 아니라 지나친 확신입니다. ’과학자들이 증명했다’는 가장 자연스러워 보이는 문장이지만, 에세이에서는 조심스러운 결론을 반박하기 쉬운 단정으로 바꿔 놓습니다. 연구 하나가 무언가를 증명하는 경우는 드뭅니다. Lexical Resource는 어휘가 얼마나 정확한지를 평가하고, 여기서 더 정확한 표현은 research suggests나 there is strong evidence that입니다. 두 번째 함정은 research라는 단어 자체입니다. ’연구’라는 뜻일 때는 보통 복수형이 없어서 researches라고 쓰면 학습자 티가 바로 납니다.

자주 하는 실수
1. ’연구들’을 복수형으로
Scientists have made many researches on this virus.
Scientists have done a lot of research on this virus.
’과학 연구’라는 뜻의 research는 보통 셀 수 없는 명사입니다. a lot of research, some research처럼 쓰고 -es를 붙이지 않습니다. 동사도 make가 아니라 do, conduct, carry out을 씁니다. 연구를 한 건 한 건 세어야 한다면 studies가 맞습니다: several studies have shown.
2. ’~에 대한 연구’를 of로
There has been a lot of research of cancer in recent decades.
There has been a lot of research into cancer in recent decades.
‘암 연구’, ’암에 대한 연구’를 옮기다 보면 of를 붙이기 쉽지만, research 뒤에는 전치사 into나 on이 옵니다. study라면 a study of도 쓸 수 있지만, research of는 어색한 직역입니다.
3. ’실험하다’를 그대로 옮기면
Scientists experimented the new drug on mice.
Scientists tested the new drug on mice.
한국어에서는 ’신약을 실험하다’처럼 실험 대상이 바로 목적어가 되지만, 동사 experiment는 목적어를 바로 받지 않습니다. experiment on mice(쥐로 실험하다), experiment with new methods(새 방법을 시험해 보다)처럼 전치사가 필요합니다. 약이나 방법을 시험해 본다는 뜻이라면 test가 가장 간단하고, 명사로 말하려면 표에 있는 carry out an experiment가 자연스럽습니다.
4. ‘과학자들이 증명했다’
Scientists have proved that social media causes depression.
Research suggests that heavy social media use is linked to depression.
첫 문장은 문법적으로는 맞지만 에세이에서는 지나치게 강한 주장입니다. 연구는 대개 원인을 증명하기보다 연관성을 보여 줍니다. research suggests, there is evidence that, is linked to 같은 신중한 표현이 더 학술적으로 들리고, 반박당하기도 어렵습니다.

Those who support basic research argue that its value often becomes clear only decades later. Many groundbreaking studies began as projects with no obvious use: researchers were simply trying to test a hypothesis about how nature works. For example, studies of how bacteria defend themselves against viruses were driven purely by curiosity, yet their findings later led to a powerful gene-editing tool. If governments allocate funds only to projects with guaranteed returns, such discoveries may never happen. In my view, research funding should therefore be divided between both types: applied projects deliver quick results, while basic science produces the long-term benefits that nobody can predict in advance.
이 문단이 좋은 이유. 첫 문장이 곧바로 입장을 밝히고, ‘과학은 유익하다’ 같은 일반론 대신 설명과 구체적인 예가 이어집니다. 표현마다 제자리가 있습니다. 가설은 검증하고(test), 예산은 배정하고(allocate), 미리 예측할 수 없는 이익은 long-term이라고 부릅니다. 마지막 문장은 과제의 ’give your opinion’에 답하면서 앞의 논거를 되풀이하지 않고 해결책을 내놓습니다. 연결어 for example, yet, therefore가 군더더기 없이 논리를 이끕니다.

I’d say it depends on the field. Most people still trust doctors and engineers, but on topics like diet, public trust in science has definitely suffered. One week coffee is harmful, the next week it’s healthy, so people assume researchers keep changing their minds. In reality, scientific consensus forms slowly, and the media rarely explain that a single study isn’t conclusive evidence.
