عند نسبة معلومة إلى مصدر، تذكر according to عادة شخصًا أو نصًا تنقل عنه: زميلًا أو مقالًا أو دراسة. أما تقديم رأيك مباشرة فالصيغة المعتادة in my opinion، لا according to my opinion.
في المعنى الآخر لا تشير according to إلى مصدر خبر، بل إلى أساس أو معيار: Students are placed in groups according to their level. هنا التوزيع بحسب المستوى. والتعبير go according to plan يعني سير الأمور كما خُطط لها.
