TY meaning in texts: “thank you”, and when it's too short

Ty is thank you, the quick chat version. Add two letters and your thanks sounds warm; without them, ty for a big favour can come across as curt.

Ty stands for thank you. Friends and acquaintances use it in texts to say thanks for small things, like a link, a photo or a quick reply. To a teacher, colleague or client, write thank you in full; out loud and in IELTS Speaking, say thanks or thank you, and abbreviations have no place in an essay.

First versionHi Professor Lee, ty for checking my essay draft.

RevisionHi Professor Lee, thank you for checking my essay draft.

A message to a teacher is polite correspondence, and ty comes from chats, so it looks careless there, as if you couldn't spare the time to say thanks properly. Only ty was replaced with the full thank you.

Cambridge Dictionary

Two letters, sm, turn ty into tysm, thank you so much: tysm for the lift, you're a lifesaver! A bare ty for serious help can seem curt. Ty and thx mean the same: one shortens thank you, the other thanks. The replies are yw, you're welcome, or np, no problem.
