Thx: meaning in texting, examples and practice

Thx is a quick thanks in texting. See how it differs from ty and tysm, when a short thank-you looks careless and how to say thanks in an email, with practice.

Thx is short for thanks. People type it quickly and in passing: for a link, a reply or a small favour. In a message to a teacher, landlord or client, write it out in full: thank you or thanks.

Could you drop thx into a text?

thx; thx for + noun/-ing; thx a lot; reply: np / no worries

  • thx for the lift, I'd have missed my train without you.
  • Got the notes, thx a lot, I'll return the book on Monday.
  • thx for waiting, I'm just parking the car now.

What changed

First versionDear Mrs Brown, thx for fixing the boiler so quickly.

RevisionDear Mrs Brown, thank you for fixing the boiler so quickly.

A message to your landlady is polite correspondence, and a chat abbreviation looks careless there. Thx has been replaced with the full thank you, and everything else stays the same.

Cambridge Dictionary

Next to thx, you'll see ty (thank you) and tysm (thank you so much). Tysm is for warmer thanks: tysm for the birthday cake, it was amazing! For serious help, a short thx can seem cold, so it's better to write it out: Thank you so much, you're a lifesaver. There are no abbreviations in an IELTS essay, and out loud, including in Speaking, people say thanks or thank you.

Your turn

Lisa sent me the Wi-Fi password I asked for, so I replied: ___, it works now!

(thx / np)

Show the answer

thx — Lisa helped you with the password, and you're the one thanking her, so thx fits. Np, no problem, is a reply to someone else's thanks, and Lisa hasn't thanked you.

A friend has helped you by giving you a lift, lending you something or sending you their notes. Write them a message with thx: say exactly what you're thanking them for and how it helped you.

thx for lending me your drill, I finally put up the shelves in the kitchen.
