Step by step: meaning, examples and practice

Step by step means doing something in stages, in the right order. Why by steps sounds wrong and how step by step differs from one by one, with practice.

Step by step means one stage at a time, in order. You use it when something is done in sequence without skipping stages: explaining instructions, learning a skill, solving a problem. Before a noun, the phrase takes hyphens: a step-by-step guide.

By steps might seem a natural way to say “in stages”, but English doesn't use it. You need the fixed form step by step: the same word twice with by between them, no article and no plural.

Cambridge Dictionary

Little by little is also about gradual change, but without separate stages: something changes a bit at a time, often without anyone noticing. The days got longer little by little: they grew longer on their own, and step by step doesn't fit here.

step by step — You follow the recipe in stages and in a set order, which is exactly step by step. One by one is about several people or things taking turns. Here it refers to a single recipe, and you can't follow one recipe “one by one”.
