Put two and two together meaning: the simple maths of guessing

You see a cake box and balloons and work out there's a party. Simple maths. But English speakers like to add a twist to this phrase, and then two and two come out as five.

Put two and two together means working something out from a few clues, even though nobody explained anything. An empty desk and a missing coat: we put two and two together and realised our colleague had gone home. The conclusion is usually simple and obvious. Put doesn't change in the past, so the phrase works just as well for yesterday.
