Put on a brave face meaning: hide how you really feel

Acting as if you're fine when you're not. There's no real courage in this phrase, even though brave means courageous, and learners often pick the wrong verb for it.

Put on a brave face means to act as if you're fine and not show that you're hurt, scared or upset. The image is a mask: a person “puts on” a calm face even though they're worried inside. People say it about failure, illness, losing a job or a break-up.
