In the nick of time meaning: just before it's too late

At the very last moment, but you made it: a train, a deadline, a rescue. English has another “last minute” phrase too, and that one often sounds like a complaint.

In the nick of time means at the very last moment, a second before it would have been too late. The expression is always about succeeding: catching the train, handing in the work, saving the situation. It's often strengthened with just: just in the nick of time.
