Cabin meaning: a wooden hut, but not the cockpit

A hut in the woods, a room on a ship, the passenger area of a plane. So cabin crew don't sit with the pilots. Who are they, and what's the pilots' space called?

A cabin is a small wooden house, often in a forest or the mountains, and also a room on a ship and the part of a plane where passengers sit. That's why cabin crew are flight attendants and a cabin bag is hand luggage. The pilots' area is the cockpit, the driver's part of a lorry is the cab, and the place where you try on clothes in a shop is a fitting room or changing room.

RevisionThe captain let my son into the cockpit to look at the controls.

Cabin may seem to fit the place where pilots sit, but on a plane the cabin is the passenger area. The space with the pilots and the controls is the cockpit. Only that word was changed.

Cambridge Dictionary

Cabin and cottage are both small houses, but different ones. A cabin is simple, usually wooden, in a forest or by a lake: a log cabin. A cottage is a small house in a village, often old and made of stone: a stone cottage in Cornwall.

During the flight, only the pilots are allowed in the ___.

(cockpit / cabin)

Show the answer

cockpit — During a flight only the pilots sit in the control area, the cockpit. The cabin is where the passengers sit, so with it the sentence would make no sense.

Describe a place where you'd like to spend a week's holiday away from the city. Say what kind of small house it is and what's nearby.

I'd love to spend a week in a log cabin by a quiet lake, with a forest behind it and no Wi-Fi.
