As such meaning: in itself, and not such as

In itself, in that role: it's not a museum as such. But in essays many people use as such to mean therefore, and strict readers stumble. Where's the line?

As such means in itself, in the strict sense: it's not a museum as such, but you can see old machinery. The second meaning is in that role: Maya is the coordinator and, as such, approves bookings, because that's part of the job. Such points back to a word already mentioned.

not a thing as such; a named role and, as such, its responsibility

What changed

First versionMaya is the coordinator and, such as, approves room bookings.

RevisionMaya is the coordinator and, as such, approves room bookings.

The same two words in reverse give such as, meaning for example, and the order is easy to mix up. But such as introduces examples, and here the sentence refers back to a role: and, as such, approves. With the words swapped back, the sentence explains the coordinator's authority.

Cambridge Dictionary

Such as means like, for example: rooms such as kitchens. As such means in itself or in that role. In essays it's often used for therefore, but strict editors dislike that; it's safer when as such points back to a role or idea named just before. For a plain therefore, use therefore.
