ChatGPT or LetsWords for IELTS Writing: which should you choose?

Why we recommend LetsWords for regular IELTS Writing preparation: your own attempts, feedback by criterion and practice between lessons.

For independent IELTS Writing preparation, we recommend LetsWords: you get feedback on your answer and practice that helps you work on the problem it identifies. ChatGPT can help with a text, and a teacher can discuss your work in a lesson, but regular preparation also requires your own attempts. LetsWords already provides the tasks, format guidance and detailed feedback for them.

ChatGPT: getting a good answer is not the same as learning to write one

Asking a chat to explain an error, discuss an argument or rewrite a paragraph is convenient. The difficulty comes after reading: can you build the next argument without a ready-made model? If all you do is ask it to improve your essay, the model does most of the writing.

You can also use a chat for active study: ask for a question, write an answer and request an explanation. But in an open conversation, you have to decide which skill to practise, whether you have addressed the task fully and what to do with the comments. If you do not yet understand IELTS requirements, those decisions are part of the same problem you came for help with.

LetsWords gives you something specific to work from: the task format, a guide, a checklist and feedback on your attempt. The benefit is more than saving a prompt. You learn to see why an answer does not meet the task and how to fix that.

A LetsWords example: a letter that misses part of the task

In General Training Task 1, you need to write to a course organiser: say that you missed a lesson, explain why and ask for the materials. Your draft contains:

I could not attend Tuesday’s class because my train was cancelled. I am sorry about this and hope it was a good lesson.

The sentences are clear, and the reason for missing the class is there. But polite English alone is not enough: you have not asked for the materials.

Feedback priority: Task Achievement. One part of the task is missing. Rather than making the apology more elaborate, add a specific request and explain what you want to catch up on:

Could you please send me the slides and any exercises from Tuesday’s class? I would like to work through them before our next lesson.

This feedback shows the difference between writing without an obvious error and completing the task. In LetsWords, you can practise task fulfilment separately and then check the whole letter. The guide to revising an answer takes a closer look at working with corrections.

A teacher: keep practising between lessons

Discussing your work with a teacher lets you ask questions and clarify something you do not understand. But discussion alone is not enough if you do not write between lessons. Waiting for the next meeting after every new attempt is inconvenient, particularly before an exam.

LetsWords lets you work at your own pace: practise paragraph cohesion today, write a full answer tomorrow, then spend time on imprecise vocabulary. You can bring completed work and specific questions to your teacher. When studying independently, you get feedback without having to fit a lesson schedule.

Why make LetsWords your main practice tool?

One service gives you hundreds of Academic and General Training tasks, Task 1 and Task 2, full-answer feedback and practice by criterion. Short practice helps you start even when you do not have enough time or confidence for a whole essay. You can work on words separately: recall them, use them in sentences, understand mistakes and return to review.

The choice is not simply about who can rewrite your text best. In the exam, you will be the one writing. That is why we recommend practising with LetsWords: your own attempt, a clear correction and a chance to practise the skill on the next task.
