5 ChatGPT prompts for learning English vocabulary through practice

Copy five ChatGPT vocabulary prompts for meaning, sentence checks, recall and reviewing mistakes. See what you organise manually and what LetsWords includes.

To use ChatGPT for English vocabulary, specify your level, the target word, a situation and the action you want to practise. “Teach me English” leaves those decisions open. A request built around one word lets you move from an explanation to trying it in a sentence.

Below are five prompts you can copy and adapt: understand a meaning in context, check a sentence, get a new situation, practise recall and collect mistakes. The key instruction is to withhold the English answer until you have tried. Otherwise, a practice request can turn into another text to read.

LetsWords already combines context, sentence writing with a target word, feedback on usage and grammar, recall and spaced repetition. You choose a collection and start learning. With ChatGPT, you arrange that sequence yourself. In the prompts below, replace [explanation language] with the language you want ChatGPT to use.

1. Understand one meaning in context

Copy the prompt and replace the word and example when needed:

I am learning English at B1–B2 level. Explain in [explanation language] what address means in “We need to address the delay”. Identify the part of speech and grammatical pattern. Give one short English example with the same meaning and one contrasting example with a different meaning of address. Do not give a long list of translations.

This request limits the explanation to the context. In the original sentence, address means to deal with the delay as a problem. It does not mean to write an address or speak to an audience. The contrast shows why a single translation cannot cover every use of the word.

After the explanation, try using address for a different problem, such as a customer complaint. That is where work outside the prompt begins: keep the intended meaning, choose the next context and request feedback. If you start a new conversation tomorrow, you need to supply that information again. In LetsWords, the context and examples are already in the card, and writing a sentence with the word is the next activity.

2. Check a sentence without changing the message

I want to say that we discussed a delivery delay. The word I am learning is discuss. Check this sentence: “We discussed about the delivery delay”. Correct word usage and grammar while preserving the original meaning and a straightforward workplace tone. Explain every necessary correction in [explanation language]. If a suggestion is only a stylistic improvement, distinguish it from an error.

Three details matter: the target word, your intended message and the tone to preserve. With discuss, the necessary correction is to remove about before the subject of the discussion:

We discussed the delivery delay.

But with is needed in We discussed the delay with the supplier: it introduces the other participant. “Never use a preposition after discuss” would therefore be the wrong lesson. The explanation must account for the role of the phrase that follows the verb.

This prompt checks one attempt. For another, you need to choose a situation and carry the corrected pattern forward. LetsWords makes that feedback part of the activity with the target word:

What LetsWords feedback shows: discussed about → discussed. You have named the subject of the discussion, and discuss takes that object directly. The correction is We discussed the delivery delay.

How to be more specific when the participant matters: We discussed the delivery delay with the supplier. The phrase with with identifies the participant while preserving the pattern without about. In the next attempt, you apply the verb to a different topic, such as discussing a budget.

See what feedback finds when you use the words you are learning now.

3. Get a situation without seeing the answer first

Give me one short situation in [explanation language] that calls for deal with in the sense of handling a problem. Use a work or study context at B1–B2 level. Do not show an English answer. Wait for my sentence, then check the meaning, grammatical pattern and grammar. Explain corrections in [explanation language], and offer the next situation only after I respond.

With this prompt, you choose how to express the situation in English. If you ask for “a sentence with a translation” instead, the English answer is already visible and you do not have to retrieve it.

For a situation involving a delay, one possible sentence is Our team is dealing with the delay. After feedback, you need another task. To avoid repeating the same delay, change the request: a different event, the same expression and a suitable difficulty. The LetsWords generator supplies a sentence in your native language at the chosen difficulty; you translate it and receive feedback.

You can try a free check on deal with. For another workplace action, use carry out and write about conducting research or completing an inspection. Both pages let you check one sentence without registration.

4. Recall words without a visible English answer

I am reviewing address, discuss, deal with and carry out. Give me one meaning or short situation at a time in [explanation language]. Do not reveal the English expression in advance. I need to recall it and write a sentence. After I answer, check usage and grammar, explain any mistake in [explanation language], and only then move to the next item.

You supply the list for this session. A few days later, you need to decide what to revisit: all four expressions or only the difficult ones. The prompt itself does not establish a spaced repetition schedule. You still need to organise and maintain that schedule separately.

Recognising a familiar sentence is not the same as being able to use its expression. If you recognise carry out, try using it with the pronoun it. Another attempt reveals whether you can produce carry it out without a model in front of you.

In LetsWords, review already uses your response history. You retrieve the English word from its meaning in your native language and apply it in a new sentence. You do not prepare another word list for every review request.

5. Collect actual mistakes for the next session

Using my answers in this conversation, make a short table with the target word, my error, the correction and an explanation in [explanation language]. Include only errors that actually occurred in my answers. Do not invent possible weaknesses. Finish with three short situations for practising the most frequent problem patterns, but do not show the English answers.

The table collects mistakes from the conversation that has taken place. To turn them into another session, you need to save the material and choose which patterns to revisit. For example, turn discussed about into a new task that requires recalling the verb pattern. LetsWords already uses response history when reviewing words, so you do not have to rebuild a table and transfer it into each new request.

Do not treat every stylistic alternative as a necessary correction. If the original sentence is correct and the suggestion merely changes the tone, preserve that distinction. Otherwise, review becomes an exercise in reproducing one fixed wording rather than expressing the message accurately.

ChatGPT and LetsWords: what must you organise?

Action ChatGPT with these prompts LetsWords
Choose words Supply a list or request a selection Ready-made sets and personal collections
Get a situation Specify the word, topic and difficulty A generator supplies a sentence in your native language at your chosen difficulty
Check usage Send the attempt and the feedback instructions Target-word and grammar checks are part of the activity
Revisit material Build the review list and arrange when to return Spaced repetition uses response history; retrieve the word and apply it
Move to Writing Supply the task, criteria and working format Hundreds of tasks, a reference, criterion exercises and full-response feedback

On Monday, you work on discuss. On Wednesday, you want to revisit it. In a chat, you find the earlier material, remove the visible answer and prepare another context. In LetsWords, you open review, recall the word from its meaning and write a sentence. Feedback shows whether the extra about has returned. This preparation is the work the trainer takes off your hands.

Keep the IELTS purpose visible

If you are preparing for an exam, identify the context when working on the word: a formal letter, a neutral description of data or an argument. A replacement expression needs to preserve meaning and fit that task.

LetsWords takes your exam or general English goal into account during checking. For further practice, IELTS Writing includes Academic and General Training tasks, exercises across four criteria and feedback on full responses.

The article ChatGPT for IELTS Writing or LetsWords compares longer writing activities. The five prompts here show the actions that make up a vocabulary session specifically.
