An IELTS Writing check can leave you with a long list of comments, yet your next text comes out much the same. For feedback to help, you need to choose an important problem, understand it in your own answer and make a specific change. In LetsWords, feedback and correction cards help you work through those steps.
The task and the original passage
A Task 2 question from the LetsWords bank:
Some people believe that universities should replace most printed textbooks with digital learning materials. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
You agree with moving to digital materials and write this body paragraph:
Digital materials are better for students because they are modern and useful. Students can use them every day. This helps them study well and makes education better. Therefore, universities should buy fewer printed textbooks.
Your position is clear. But modern, useful and better repeat a positive judgement without explaining the advantage. Saying students can use them every day also applies to printed textbooks. The conclusion about buying fewer textbooks does not yet rest on a convincing reason.
LetsWords feedback example: choose the main revision
Start with Task Response. The main problem in this passage is the development of the argument. The reader sees that you agree, but not which specific learning need digital materials meet better. Add that reason first, then work on individual words.
A correction card turns the comment into work on the paragraph:
- Choose one advantage, such as being able to update materials quickly.
- Explain which subjects this matters for and what the student gains.
- Compare that advantage with a printed textbook.
- Connect the argument to your position on the question.
You do not need to invent a study or a percentage of students. A clear example from a learning situation can explain the reason.
The next version of the paragraph
Digital materials are particularly useful in subjects such as computer science, where course content can become outdated quickly. A lecturer can update an online chapter when a programming tool changes, so students work with current instructions instead of relying on an older printed edition. For these courses, replacing most textbooks with regularly updated digital resources would make the material more relevant to what students need to learn.
The new version identifies a specific advantage, where it applies and why it helps. Updating instructions shows why the digital format matters here. The last sentence connects the argument back to the question of replacing textbooks.
For these courses limits the argument to the subjects you have discussed. Elsewhere in the essay, you need to make clear how broadly you support replacement. If your introduction states one position but the body supports another, an extra linking phrase will not fix it.
Why changing the words would not have helped
Replacing useful with beneficial and better with superior would change the vocabulary but leave the argument empty. Adding moreover before the second sentence would not supply a reason either. When the problem is the content, a useful revision changes the content.
This is how LetsWords helps you prioritise: the feedback points to a place in your text, and the correction work explains what to do with it. You do not have to restructure the whole answer and fix every small error at once.
Check the revision and apply the skill to another task
After revising, ask yourself:
- Does the paragraph give a reason, rather than simply say that something is good?
- Is it clear how the example supports that particular reason?
- Is the conclusion broader than the argument you have developed?
- Does the paragraph’s position agree with the introduction and conclusion?
Then try explaining a different advantage, such as access to materials off campus. Build a new explanation instead of copying the finished paragraph. This shows whether you have learned how to develop the argument.
LetsWords has separate Task Response practice for this work. You can focus on a short passage and then return to the full essay. If phrasing is the difficulty, practise the words you need in sentences with feedback and review. The guide to the four criteria explains the different skills.
If your work is already written, start with feedback on it. Choose IELTS Writing practice in LetsWords and turn comments into clear actions you can repeat in your next answer.
