Stay out meaning: to be out late at night

Staying out late or not coming home all night: that's stay out. Add one preposition and it means “don't get involved”. But which one? The obvious choice is wrong.

Stay out means to stay away from home late, or not come home at all: stay out late, stay out all night. With of, the meaning changes: stay out of something means not to get involved, or to keep away from something: stay out of trouble, stay out of the sun.
