Rizz: slang meaning, examples and practice

What rizz means as slang for charm, how the verb rizz up works, and where the word fits, with examples and a past-tense exercise.

Rizz means charm — the ability to make people like you and flirt easily, usually in a romantic sense. There's also a verb, rizz someone up, meaning to charm or win someone over. The word is playful and used in texting and among friends; in IELTS Speaking, in letters and essays, say charm instead: He has a lot of charm.

  • She tried to rizz him up but he just laughed and walked off.
  • My little brother has zero rizz when he talks to girls.

What changed

First versionHe rizz her up at the party last night.

RevisionHe rizzed her up at the party last night.

Rizz is a fairly new slang word, and its verb form follows regular rules: the past tense is rizzed, not rizz. It's easy to forget the -ed ending because the word still looks unfamiliar.

Cambridge Dictionary

Rizz is mostly about flirting and sounds playful. For charm at work or in public, people say charisma: Our new manager has real charisma, everyone listens to her. Calling a manager's charm so much rizz only works as a joke, and only among friends.

Your turn

She ___ him up in the coffee queue and walked away with his number.

(rizzed / rizz)

Show the answer

rizzed — Everything already happened: she charmed the guy in the queue and walked away with his number, and the second verb, walked, is also in the past tense. So the sentence needs rizzed. Rizz without the ending is the base form and doesn't fit a story about the past.

Describe a situation where someone (you or someone you know) charmed people remarkably quickly: at a party, on a trip or in a new group.

My roommate has so much rizz that he made friends with everyone at the party in ten minutes.
