Keep away: meaning, examples and practice

Keep away means to stay at a distance or to stop something coming near. Why it isn't hold away, how it differs from keep off, examples and a short exercise.

Keep away means to stay at a distance and not go near something (keep away from something), or to stop something coming near (keep something away). The first meaning is common in warnings and advice: Keep away from the fire. The second is about something that stops unwanted things coming close: a net keeps insects away. Stay away from means the same.
