Further vs farther: the difference, examples and practice

For distance you can say further or farther, but extra questions are only further questions. British usage, a typical mistake and an exercise.

Both farther and further can describe distance, but only further means “more, additional”: further information, further questions. In British English, further is the usual choice for distance too: The station is further than I thought.

further or farther — can you pick the right one?

Both words can mean “more distant”, so it's easy to carry farther over to a sentence that isn't about distance at all. Additional details are further details. Farther is only about distance and doesn't go with details.

Cambridge Dictionary

Further can also be a verb meaning “to help something develop or succeed”: She took an evening course to further her career. Farther has no such use.

further — The sentence is about extra questions, not distance, so only further works. Farther means “more distant in space” and isn't used with questions.
