Basic in slang means predictable and unoriginal: it describes someone whose tastes simply follow the trends, or a choice that everyone makes. The tone is mocking and dismissive: calling someone basic to their face is a dig. People say it on social media and among friends, often jokingly about themselves. In an essay or IELTS Speaking, the word isn't used in this sense; neutral options are predictable or nothing special.

Outside slang, basic is neutral: basic skills, the basics, wardrobe basics. The word becomes mocking when it judges a person or their taste: She's so basic. So writing basic Spanish on a CV is perfectly normal, but saying you're basic is a dig.
