더하다, 합계를 내다: add up the bill.

첫 번째 뜻은 일상적입니다: add up the bill, add up your scores. 두 번째 뜻은 부정문으로 자주 씁니다: it doesn't add up — '뭔가 앞뒤가 안 맞아'.

add up + numbers/bill; add something up; add up to + total; something doesn't add up

  • Can you add up these receipts and tell me how much we spent on the trip?
  • Our coffee and snacks at work add up to about forty pounds a month.
  • He says he was at home all evening, but his story just doesn't add up.

The total cost of the course adds up 300 euros.

The total cost of the course adds up to 300 euros.

합계 금액을 말할 때는 add up to를 씁니다: adds up to 300 euros. costs 300 euros처럼 숫자를 동사 바로 뒤에 두는 구조에 이끌려 to를 빠뜨리기 쉽습니다. to가 없으면 비용이 스스로 무언가를 더하는 것처럼 들려 문장이 무너집니다.

Cambridge Dictionary

뒤에 아무것도 없는 add up은 '더하다' 또는 '앞뒤가 맞다'이고, add up to는 합계를 말합니다: Three coffees a day add up to a lot of money. make up('지어내다')과 헷갈리지 마세요: He made up the whole story. 누군가 made up한 이야기는 대개 doesn't add up입니다.

즉 doesn't add up입니다. make up은 '지어내다'라는 뜻이고 목적어가 필요해서(she made it up), her excuse doesn't make up은 말이 되지 않습니다.

My neighbour's story didn't add up: he said he was away all week, but his car was outside every night.
