What do you mean meaning: “please explain”

Use it when you didn't quite understand someone. But add just one comma, and the polite question turns into an indignant “excuse me?!”, with no politeness left.

What do you mean? asks someone to explain what they're trying to say. People use it to ask about words they didn't understand. If you repeat the other person's words after a comma, the question sounds surprised or indignant: What do you mean, it's cancelled?
