Go well: meaning, examples and practice

Go well means to be a success, and go well with means to match. How to say an interview went well, how it differs from do well, and an exercise.

Go well means to be successful or turn out as you hoped. You use it about meetings, interviews, trips and other events: The interview went well. With the preposition with, it has a second meaning, to look or taste good together: Red wine goes well with cheese.

What changed

First versionThe job interview passed well, and they invited me for a second meeting.

RevisionThe job interview went well, and they invited me for a second meeting.

Passed can seem like the right verb for how an event turned out, but pass means other things. About time, it means to go by: The weeks passed quickly. About an exam, it means to succeed in it: pass an exam. To say how an event went, English uses go: go well, go badly. So passed was changed to went.

Cambridge Dictionary

Go well is about an event, and do well is about a person who succeeds at something: The exam went well describes the exam, while I did well in the exam means I got a good result. You can't say I went well about yourself.
