As a result: meaning, examples and practice

“As a result” links a cause to its effect. When to use “as a result of”, why not “in result”, how it differs from “because of”, plus an exercise.

“As a result” means “because of this” or “so”: it introduces the effect of something. First you say what happened, then what it led to. If you name the cause without a verb, as a single word or a phrase, use “as a result of”: “as a result of the storm”.

“In result” is not an English expression. The correct phrase is “as a result”, with the preposition “as” and the article “a”.

Cambridge Dictionary

“As a result” introduces the effect, while “because of” and “due to” name the cause. Compare: “We stayed at home because of the rain.” and “It rained all day. As a result, we stayed at home.” The verb “result in” also leads to the effect, but it is used inside the sentence: “The storm resulted in several cancelled flights.”

as a result of — The gap is followed by “the accident”, a cause without a verb, so you need “as a result of”. Without “of”, “as a result” starts a new idea with a full sentence: “As a result, we took a longer route.”
