To invite someone on a first date. But change one verb before out, and instead of “I asked her out” your friends will hear that you're already a couple.

Ask out means to invite someone on a date. Sometimes it's broader, an invitation to spend time together, but it almost always has a romantic feel: He asked her out for dinner.
